Workshop: Madrid resists: Capital of Antifascism (1936-1946)

Salón de Actos. Facultad de Geografía e Historia (UCM), Madrid
Wednesday 19 April 2017
Organiser: Jorge Marco, University of Bath

Madrid was an international symbol of anti-fascist resistance during the 1930s and 1940s. The slogan “No pasarán” [They shall not pass], used during the siege of the city, became a universal reference. In fact, these elements are still part of the antifascist collective imaginary. However, this contrasts with the lack of knowledge on the specific role of Madrid in anti-fascist resistance during the Spanish Civil War and World War II. The aim of this seminar is to shed light on the extent of resistance in Madrid between 1936 and 1946 and identify possible areas of future research.
