Witnesses of Effort and Tragedy: The Exhibition of Posters from the Spanish Civil War in Prague

Zdenko Maršálek

In Prague, the exhibition of posters from the Spanish Civil War opened on 6th April 2017. The exhibition was prepared in cooperation with the National Archives in Prague and the Institute for Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The opening ceremony included a brief lecture by Dr. Zdenko Maršálek from the above mentioned Institute, as well as a very interesting speech by Dr. Richard Falbr, himself a son of a soldier of the International Brigades and former member of the European Parliament.

The posters were of great importance during the Spanish Civil War and became one of the main propaganda tools. The visual perception alongside the spoken word often represented the only possibility of public activity, especially in the countryside, where a large proportion of the population was then illiterate. A number of well-known artists have contributed to the creation of posters; thus, many of the posters also have a high artistic value.

The collection of posters stored in the National Archives in Prague contains a total of 215 items. Since 2013, it is available in digitized form at http://www.badatelna.eu/fond/4766/ (click “Inventář” there to go to the inventory and see individual posters). For the purpose of the exhibition, sixteen posters were selected, which are installed in the National Archives foyer until 7th June 2017.
